Where does the Clown / Jester figure archetype originate from ? It seems to go far back, way before the road shows / circuses of the 19th century, & even before the courts of Royalty around medieval Europe. Numerous American tribes like the Hopi or the Pueblo, have mythologies around this archetype, yet most cultures do once you look into it .
